Sustainable management of production areas

Support for improving the production, availability and quality of genetic material (seeds, fry, breeding stock)

The Project supports the production of improved genetic material through support for the entrepreneurial development of players in the seed sector and the supply of breeding stock for small livestock farming (poultry, pigs, goats, rabbit farming). In partnership with the National Institute for Agronomic Study and Research (INERA), and the support of a specialized international partner, the Project facilitates the production of basic and pre-basic seeds for the main food and market crops as well as fry. A partnership is established with SENASEM to ensure the traceability and certification of seeds, the inventory of multipliers and their technical supervision. The Project supports the structuring of seed multipliers seed networks, to improve the availability and marketing of quality seeds on the markets. Around 450 multipliers (18 per basin) and at least 20 fish farmer organizations will be supported.

Agricultural extension and training of producers/fish farmers

In order to ensure the adoption of technical itineraries, the establishment of farmer field schools (CEP) gives priority to the agricultural products most in demand on the semi-wholesale markets. Around 2,300 CEPs will affect a total of 63,000 producers on i) climate-smart technical routes, ii) the introduction of small mechanization and adapted tools and, iii) integrated pest control. The CEPs may be, depending on the context: i) agroforestry (40%); ii) traditional for food crops and market gardening (35% of the total); iii) agro-pastoral (CEAP) (20%) including coordination with small livestock farming; iv) fish farming59 (5%). All will include modules strengthening nutritional security. Existing demonstration sites from specialized private or public technical partners will be leveraged as a source of innovation. The Project also complements the training of agricultural advisors (decentralized technical services and POs) on the aspects covered in the CEPs. The provincial technical services will monitor activities and will also be responsible for the dissemination of innovative techniques and good practices in neighboring communities.

Volet 1.2.2

Development of small adapted mechanization

In order to reduce the heavy workload and in response to the needs of producers, while ensuring the promotion of soil conservation practices, the AVENIR Project supports the use of adapted agricultural tools and small mechanization (motor tillers) in family farming through: (i) the use of youth associations/cooperatives, agricultural service providers (at least one initiative per basin); (ii) support for local crafts (at least one initiative per market); (iii) dissemination of mechanized tests in CEPs and demonstration sites; and (iv) constant exchanges between producers and artisans during technical events. This activity is eligible for support for entrepreneurial initiatives (sub-component 1.4).
