Improving family nutritional security and supporting women’s empowerment
Diversification and transformation of agricultural production
Healthy, balanced and diversified diets are promoted through the availability of nutritious foods at household level and in local markets as well as support for post-harvest technologies: multi-purpose solar dryers, presses, packaging and processing equipment that preserve and improve the nutritional values of foods. The intervention includes, for 100,000 vulnerable households: (i) the installation of home gardens (market gardening), (ii) the introduction of improved stoves aimed at reducing the workload of women, as well as support for 2,550 entrepreneurial initiatives with high nutritional value (see SC 1.4) including the artisanal processing and marketing of agro-pastoral and fishing products, the promotion of small livestock (small ruminants, pigs, poultry) and the dissemination of techniques for preserving and processing fruits and vegetables. In addition, the Project supports the local production of fortified complementary foods in the form of “enriched flours” to improve access, availability and use of complementary foods with high nutritional value for children under 5 years old. The Project is developing a memorandum of understanding with the Food Quality Control Center (OCC: Congolese quality control and certification office) for the quality assurance of derived products. The Project promotes women's empowerment and gender equality through functional literacy, awareness of gender aspects and domestic violence by setting up community radio listening clubs
Section 1.3.1
Nutritional education
Section 1.3.2
Access to drinking water
This intervention aims to reduce the incidence of water-borne diseases and the time spent collecting water. Access to drinking water will be improved through (i) the construction of autonomous water stations in the production basins and (ii) the establishment of community management committees which will have to cover the costs of maintenance and renewal67 by using local repair artisans.
Section 1.3.3
Functional literacy, gender and women's empowerment
The AVENIR Project supports the functional literacy activities of 1,000 young and female entrepreneurs. This activity is carried out in synergy with other initiatives of the Government and civil society organizations. The training includes, among other things, women's leadership modules, in particular for women members of POs, for participation in decision-making and access to land (FIAT system). Nutrition interventions are implemented, monitored and reported by its implementing partners. A KAP survey (knowledge, attitudes and practices related to nutrition) will be carried out during the Project baseline study. The results will be used to develop training modules.
